March – April

• If your teenager has applied for a course or apprenticeship, they will probably find out the result.

• Help your teenager prepare for, practice and go to interviews.

• If your teenager is unsure of their plans, they can talk to their school careers teacher or Connexions personal adviser.
  
  
• Help your teenager fill in their Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) form if you think they should get it and make sure they have opened a bank account.

May – July

• GCSE exams start in May.

• Year 11 students are allowed to start full-time work or training after the last Friday in June.

• Students can still ring colleges, schools and apprenticeship providers direct to see if any places are left.

• Teenagers can look on our website or visit their local Connexions centre for local job and apprenticeship vacancies: www.connexions-leics.org./jobs.

August – September

• GCSE results come out.

• Don’t panic! It's not too late for your teenager to change their plans. Encourage your teenager to vist their local Connexions centre or school for help.

• Your teenager starts work, training or their new course.

• College enrolment begins in late August. Your teenager will meet their tutor, discuss courses with teachers and get to know the college. This process usually lasts a week or so.

September – October

• Students may meet their Connexions personal adviser in a lesson at school.

• Talk to your teenager about career options. They can also talk to their Connexions personal adviser and teachers; and use careers/Connexions resources in school to find out about jobs and options after Year 11.

• Your teenager can use Course Finder to find out what apprenticeships, training and courses are on offer.

November - February

• Look out for details of careers events and open days.

• Offer to go with your teenager to visit colleges, schools or training providers – most have open days or evenings. You can find details on the CourseFinder website.

• Your teenager should be applying for popular jobs and apprenticeships. Look in the Leicester Mercury or other local papers. They could also contact companies to ask about vacancies.

• Your teenager will need to fill in the Leicester and Leicestershire Common Application Process form (LeCAP) if they plan to continue studying. The closing date is the end of January.

• Encourage your teenager to talk to their Connexions personal adviser if they might want to do e2e or an apprenticeship.
