Apprenticeships
Are there different levels of apprenticeship?
There are two levels available, apprenticeships and advanced apprenticeships. Apprenticeships are equivalent to 5 GCSES (grade A-C) and advanced apprenticeships are equivalent to two A levels. If you want to start an advanced apprenticeship you will need to have five GCSEs (at grade C or above) or have completed an apprenticeship.
Both apprenticeships work towards NVQs and Key Skills qualifications. In most cases you will also get a BTEC or City & Guilds.
How long does an apprenticeship take to complete?
It usually takes between one to four years to complete an apprenticeship. The amount of time it will take you depends on your skills and qualifications and the requirements of the job you are training for.
Where can I find out about local apprenticeship training?
www.coursefinder-leics.org has details of all apprenticeship training available locally.
How do I apply for an apprenticeship?
If you are still a student...
You can apply for an apprenticeship on the Leicester and Leicestershire Common Application Process (LeCAP) form. Your current school or college will help you to fill in an electronic LeCAP form. If your school is not using the electronic LeCAP form they may give you a paper copy to fill in. You will then be contacted to let you know what to do next.
Apprentices need to find an employer as well as a training place so start applying to employers with apprenticeship job vacancies. Register with the Apprenticeship Vacancy Matching Service and look for local vacancies you could apply for.
You should also look for apprenticeships that are advertised:
- On our vacancies page.
- In local papers.
- Also send your CV to local employers and ask if they want an apprentice.
-
If you have left school...
You can still find an apprenticeship after you leave school. Visit your local Connexions centre for help.
I can't find an employer. Can I start an apprenticeship?
If you can't find a company to employ you, you may be able to start your apprenticeship with a training provider or college who will try and arrange some work experience for you. This is called a 'programme-led apprenticeship'. In some cases colleges may offer you a place on a full-time course if you can't find an employer.
Is there money available for apprentices who don't have an employer?
You can apply for EMA - Education Maintenance Allowance. Your family income must be below £30,810 a year to qualify. Also your parents will be able to carry on claiming Child Benefit and Child Tax Credits for you up to your 20th birthday - even if you don’t qualify for EMA.
What can I do after an apprenticeship?
When you finish an apprenticeship, you could:
- Go on to do a higher level apprenticeship.
- Go into higher education.
- Go into skilled employment and further training.
