Extended work experience
Your school or college may offer you the chance to go on extended work experience as part of a programme of work related learning.
Schools can use the regulations under Section 363 of the Education Act 1996 (Disapplication of the National Curriculum at KS4 for a wider focus on work related learning) to provide extended work placements with employers and training providers for some pupils. These placements vary from half a day to three days per week.
Schools may set aside one or two of the following subjects so that you can go on extended work experience:
- Modern foreign language
- Design and technology
- Science
Students and their parent or carers must be involved in the decision to disapply and be consulted about the nature of the programme to be provided. Your curriculum programme should offer you experience of the working environment and working practice and the opportunity to develop literacy, numeracy and key skills. The work related programme must complement the education provided through the national curriculum and also contribute towards approved qualifications.
Students must continue to study:
- English
- Maths
- ICT
- PE
- RE
- Sex Education
- Careers Education and Guidance
